Faye Wong, the goddess with gold voice

The song "Eyes On Me" was originally sung by the famous Hong Kong singer, Faye Wong (or Wong Fei)! It was rumoured that Squaresoft paid Faye Wong, a.k.a "sky Queen", about a million dollars to have her sing the main theme to Final Fantays VIII. The song only has an english version. Below are some pictures of the lovely and talented singer:

Faye Wong was born on August 8, 1969 in Beijing, China. Her mother was an Chinese opera singer who was often traveling on the road to perform. Her father was an factory engineer and was also very busy with his work. Growing up, Faye spent very little time with her parents. Since they were seldom at home, Faye lived with her god-mother. Faye liked to sing when she was very young, often portraying her own mother.

At the age of 18, Faye and her family moved to Hong Kong. Faye was very bored there because she couldn't speak Cantonese, and didn't know any friends. She decided to take modeling school, but soon got bored of it. Her father, seeing that Faye had nothing to do, introduced her to Di An Tsong, a very experienced music teacher. Everyone who's heard Faye sing were all very astonished when they heard her magnificent voice. She took part in many school plays which required her to sing.

After about 2 years, Faye's music teacher introduced her to a small Hong Kong record label Cinepoly. She signed her first record contract which would last about 9 years. Faye postponed her education hoping to continue at the university after her contract ends.

Faye's first three albums where Shirley Wong, Everything, and Your the Only One. They weren't all that popular because she told by her record label to be just like any other Hong Kong singer back then. She had no personality nor originality. The songs were all teenage pop songs that sounded like every other teenage pop song. =)

After the release of her 3rd album, Faye traveled to the U.S. to study music. She was disappointed from her not-so-successful start in Hong Kong. But while in the U.S., Faye saw so many different people, each and everyone of them different in their own way. This made her believe that she also needed to change. When Faye returned to Hong Kong, she had much more self-confidence and became much more mature.

When Faye released her 4th album, Coming Home, she changed her name to Wong Fei, the name she was given at birth. This album gained alot of recognition. Faye's road to super-stardom has begun!

Faye decided to cancel her enrollment at the university and took a full-time career as a singer. She released many albums which were all very successful. Faye's contracted had ended with Cinepoly. In 1997, she signed with EMI, a very big international record label. Soon after she signed, the album, Wong Fei was released. In my opinion, this album is probably her best next to Only Love Strangers. EMI really helped Faye gain a lot more fame and popularity.
